Nestled in Wayne, PA, the inspiration for this beautiful and historical home in the Suburbs of Philadelphia was classic elegance with a whimsical flair. Our Main Line, PA client sought a timeless design that was elegant and rich with character, straying from the sterility associated with overly modern interiors.

Guided by the principles of color theory and the exotic allure of Chinoiserie style, our design team created a truly transitional style interior that is timeless with a touch of whimsy, celebrating our client’s love for playful and earthy patterns in a way that will never go out of style.

At Henck Design, an award-winning full-service design company, we are known for crafting individualized Modern Classic spaces that embrace a neutral color palette. However, the color scheme for this project was expanded beyond our classic interior design approach to include touches of blue and white in addition to our quintessential neutrals.

In the blue and white living room, the intricately patterned rug and decorative porcelain accents are inspired by chinoiserie style. The name of this design aesthetic is derived from the French word for China, “chinois,” and it celebrates the whimsical, earth-centric, and worldly aspects of Asian culture and motifs. Notably, chinoiserie style centers around the colors blue and white, an ode to the blue-and-white motifs found on Chinese porcelain since the 17th Century.

In addition to the elegantly exotic appeal of this color combo, blue and white are very compatible in terms of color theory. Blue is associated with feelings of tranquility and calmness, and white promotes a soft and airy ambiance. The result is a color palette that is adventurous and versatile, aligning perfectly with the design direction for this residential interior design project.

The neutral, streamlined furniture in the living room acts as an anchor balancing the more ornate patterns found in the rug and decor. While the room is styled to give off a playful energy, the modern neutral color palette–specifically the neutrality of the sofa, accent chairs, custom drapery, and custom-upholstered chaise–appeals to more contemporary design trends.

The chinoiserie-chic style exhibited in the public areas of the home carries into the master bedroom, where a blue-and-white patterned bed spread adds intrigue to the sleek four-poster bed frame. Gold accents in the circular crystal chandelier correspond with the hardware on the lucite shelving, and the carefully-curated styling items on the shelves, such as glassware, ceramics, and blue books, give the room a cohesive yet adventurous flair.

The star of the show in this Philadelphia Suburbs home is the unique wallpaper in the master bath. As the most private space in the home, this flamingo-patterned wallpaper reflects the client’s adventurous spirit while still maintaining a cohesive and stylish connection with the overall nature and blue and white themed design narrative of the home.
