A Transitional Blend of Rustic & Modern

Black-and-white interior design doesn’t have to mean the spaces become cold or stark. If the foundation of the design scheme carries these high-contrast tones, the Henck Design team finds ways to infuse rooms with warmth by adding natural elements and character.

Henck Design (HD) coordinated and helped manage many aspects of this extensive renovation project for this colonial style home.

HD incorporated cedar beams, a completely new fresh black & white kitchen, deep olive green tones and board and batten style millwork to add interest to the heavily renovated transitional home with a farmhouse flair.

For this updated colonial home, HD procured every piece of furniture and lighting needed for each room. Henck also provided rugs, home accessories and other decorative items to complete the interior design.

In order to bring the formal living room to life in 2022, Christina Henck and her design team chose to transform the otherwise lightly-used space into a room for entertainment and libations. Modern finishes like glossy black trim, updated floor finish, new rustic furnishings with curated antiques and cowhides complete the room for an overall transitional space with a modern farmhouse flair.

Curved shapes are abundant throughout the home's interior design elements. There are arch shapes in the living room sideboard as well as arm chairs with geometric offsetting threads and diamond patterns.

Calf skins, leather furniture with hand carved wood, and coffee table books with Ralph Lauren references highlight the rustic aesthetic alongside others like the all American Tom Ford book on the coffee table.

Henck Custom designed dry bar boasts a bronze-metallic backsplash tile with custom painted cabinets, upgraded hardware and glass lite upper cabinets, which feature family heirlooms.

Living organic sculptural items like teak boulders and the centrally placed cow skull over the living room fireplace reinforce the rustic and modern feel of the home’s design.

The casual style dining room offers an abundance of natural light, original artwork, and expansive case pieces allowing for storage & natural finishes to stand out.
Because one of the home owners is a medical doctor of neuroscience, HD incorporated original art taken from microscopic photos of the human brain and rendered them to be high definition photos that were then printed and framed professionally.

White board and batten on the walls for millwork in the dining room with modern farmhouse style sconces with natural finishes and raw wood and finished with antlers reinforced the up-to-date American country feel. A Boho style wool rug warms up the room for an additional cozy quality.

The color story in both formal living room and dining rooms have deep greens, natural light wood tones, gold and contrasting charcoal and black elements.

In the Kitchen is a Gorgeous custom hood with black pot filler just below siting over a 36” gas range. Handmade backsplash tile, rough sawn cedar wood beams, and black upper and lower cabinets combine as contrasting design elements to create this one of a kind Henck Design spaces.

The expansive chef’s kitchen has a softly contrasting island with a continuous white quartz for all countertops.

The Black fixtures, apron front sink, open with skylights and vaulted ceilings keep this Delaware family kitchen bright and open.

In the family room, a huge black velvet sectional sofa sits across a statement piece fireplace and custom bookshelves. The scale of the oversize bespoke ottoman stands up well to the sectional and the large white armchair balances the both to finish the upholstery in the room for gatherings.

Christina Henck took a world famous artist, Greg Dunn’s work and divided it into equal sized sections and then created a symmetrical design similar to a natural marbles traditional book matching for the fireplace. Cove lighting inside black bookshelves glow to illuminate special pieces that continue to tell the family and their home’s interior design story.
